StepChange Trust Deed FAQs

What Is a Step Change Trust Deed?

A Protected Trust Deed is one of the debt solutions that can be recommended by Step Change. It is a solution only available to people living in Scotland, and to qualify, you typically need at least £5,000 of debt that you would struggle to repay over four years.

The Trust Deed is a legal agreement to repay your creditors a monthly sum for a set period. The repayment period usually lasts four years, but some Trust Deeds can be shorter and longer. The major benefit of using a Trust Deed is experienced at the end of the agreement. Once your repayment term ends, all remaining debt is wiped.

Some people save thousands of pounds by wiping their debt at the end of the Trust Deed. But there are other details you must know before committing. You can learn more about Trust Deeds on our Trust Deed blogs

Who Provides a Step Change Trust Deed?

A Trust Deed must be arranged and overseen by a qualified person known as an insolvency practitioner. For this reason, Step Change cannot provide a Trust Deed service themselves.

But you can still get a Trust Deed by going to Step Change for free debt advice first. If they believe a Trust Deed is the most advantageous debt solution in your circumstances, they can refer you to one of their third-party Trust Deed providers.
