If you cannot top up or repay meter debt, contact ScottishPower promptly. Understand emergency credit, standing charges and affordable support.

What should I do if I am running out of credit?

Check whether the meter offers emergency credit and contact ScottishPower if you cannot top up or are already off supply. Explain any health condition, disability, young children or other circumstances that make loss of supply dangerous. Do not wait until every unit of credit has gone.

ScottishPower’s current support page lists 0345 270 0700 for prepayment help. Some smart-meter customers can request a credit advance through its app; approval depends on circumstances and is not unlimited. Emergency or additional credit generally needs to be repaid.

Why can a prepayment meter show debt?

The balance may include agreed recovery of earlier bills, emergency or friendly credit already used, and daily standing charges. Standing charges can continue even when no energy is used. Ask for a breakdown and the meter’s repayment rate rather than assuming all money from a top-up will be available for new energy.

If you have just moved in, tell the supplier the moving date and opening readings. Do not assume that debt from a previous occupier is yours. Ask it to correct the account and meter settings if necessary.

What are friendly credit hours?

These are specified periods when an eligible meter can keep supplying energy after ordinary credit runs out. ScottishPower’s rules differ between traditional electricity, smart prepayment and traditional gas meters, and may require credit at the start of the period. Check your meter’s current rules on the support page; they are not a guarantee of continuous supply at all times.

Can I ask for a lower debt repayment rate?

Yes. Explain what you can afford after essential spending and ask for a review. Suppliers must take account of ability to pay when agreeing debt recovery. If the meter or repayment setting is unsuitable, ask about alternatives and support. Ofgem explains the help available.

Additional support credit is not restricted to a simple list of four categories, and being a pensioner does not automatically guarantee unlimited credit. Tell the supplier about your actual needs so it can assess support and whether prepayment remains safe and practical.

Can the supplier force me onto prepayment?

There are strict suitability, vulnerability and last-resort safeguards. Arrears or a poor credit history alone do not remove them. The rules also apply when a smart meter is remotely switched to prepayment. See Ofgem’s involuntary prepayment guidance.

Are prepayment meters being abolished?

No general phase-out of prepayment as a payment method took place in 2024. Smart meters can operate in either credit or prepayment mode. Replacing an older meter with a smart meter does not necessarily change how you pay.

What further help is available?

Ask about ScottishPower’s Hardship Fund, relevant discounts and local support. Eligibility varies and debt write-off is not guaranteed. A free debt adviser can assess formal debt options and, in England and Wales, eligibility for Breathing Space. That protection requires the proper adviser-led process; a general request for more time is different.

How do I complain?

Complain to ScottishPower first and keep bills, meter photos, top-up receipts and correspondence. You can normally take an unresolved complaint to the Energy Ombudsman after eight weeks or a deadlock letter. If you accept its decision, the supplier must carry out the required remedy. The Energy Ombudsman is separate from Ofgem and the Financial Ombudsman Service.
