Can you get stopped at an airport for debt?
Ordinary unpaid consumer debts, such as credit cards or loans, do not by themselves give a debt collector power to stop or arrest you at a UK airport.
A separate arrest warrant, criminal matter or breach of a court order is different. If any of those may apply, get legal advice before travelling. Do not ignore court documents.

Do you have to pay debt if you leave the country?
Some people wrongly believe that by leaving the country, even temporarily, you can get away from your debts.
Moving or travelling abroad does not cancel a debt. Keep agreed payments up to date where you can, and contact the creditor or a free debt adviser if they are unaffordable.
This applies whether you leave temporarily or move permanently.
How the introduction works
The Debt Advice Service can discuss your circumstances and explain available options, including their benefits, costs and risks.
Options depend on your circumstances. You decide whether to proceed.

What if you’re planning on coming back to the UK?
If you aren’t moving on a permanent basis, you will, of course, have to return at some point.
Interest, charges or legal action may continue while you are away, depending on the agreement, any support arrangement and applicable rules. They are not an automatic fixed consequence of travelling.

A CCJ is a civil judgment. Having an unpaid CCJ does not itself mean that a collector can have you detained at the airport.
A creditor may seek lawful enforcement of a judgment. Some methods, such as a warrant of control more than six years after judgment, require court permission. Do not assume an old judgment has disappeared.
How far can debt collectors go to get you to pay?
Debt collectors have no power to detain you at an airport because you owe an ordinary consumer debt.
Failing to supply a forwarding address does not give them that power. It can, however, make it easier to miss important correspondence or court deadlines.
A collection agency is different from a court enforcement officer. It must not misrepresent its powers.
If a collector threatens arrest merely for an unpaid consumer debt, keep the message and seek advice about making a complaint.

What happens if you don’t give them a forwarding address?
Not giving a forwarding address does not allow a collector to stop you at an airport. Keep creditors and any court dealing with your case informed of an appropriate contact address.
A creditor may be able to seek enforcement against assets in the UK, but it must use the applicable legal procedure.
Make arrangements to receive and deal with correspondence while abroad. Sending an address update does not itself resolve the debt or prevent legal proceedings.
A creditor may use an overseas collection agency or consider proceedings in another country.
The available routes depend on the debt, any existing judgment and the countries involved.
If overseas action is threatened, obtain advice covering the relevant country as well as the UK debt.
What happens if you don’t give them any information?
A collection agency cannot simply take your UK assets because you have not supplied an address. Enforcement normally requires the appropriate legal authority.
For example, a court may authorise enforcement against goods or money in a bank account after judgment. Different rules apply to some debts, such as tax.
That civil enforcement process does not create a general power to stop you at an airport.
For practical help, see StepChange’s guidance on dealing with UK debts from abroad. Tell the adviser about any court order, warrant or deadline.
