Should You Tell Your Insurer?

Take reasonable care to answer the insurer’s questions accurately about unspent convictions, points and bans. Check the policy for changes you must report before renewal. Spent convictions generally do not need to be disclosed for ordinary motor insurance, even when asked. If the question or your conviction’s status is unclear, get advice before answering.

Answer the insurer’s question about licence history as it is worded. Do not automatically disregard all driving experience before a licence was reissued; ask the provider how to report a retest or revocation.

Will Your Premium Go Up?

There is no fixed percentage or cash increase that applies to everyone. Insurers consider the offence, driving history, vehicle, address, use and other factors. A historic average cannot predict your quote, and some insurers may decline. Compare current personalised quotes for suitable cover.

Compare cover as well as price

Compare cover, excess, exclusions, payment terms and total price. Answer the insurer’s questions accurately.

A comparison does not guarantee a saving or an offer of insurance.

How Can You Get It?

Check that you are legally entitled to learn and that the proposed cover accepts your licence type and convictions. Compare learner policies, specialist brokers and any option to become a genuine named driver. Insurance cannot allow you to drive while banned.

What Is the Least Expensive Car To Insure After a Ban?

No provider or car is cheapest for every learner with convictions. Obtain quotes for the actual car, supervision arrangements and use before buying cover.

Compare premiums alongside cover, exclusions, compulsory and voluntary excess and any instalment interest. Specialist insurers and brokers may help, but are not automatically cheaper. Use accurate mileage and vehicle-use details. Only add a genuine named driver, identify the main driver correctly and choose an excess you can afford.

How Long Does It Last?

Driving-record retention and the period before a conviction becomes spent are different. The sentence, your age and the relevant UK jurisdiction matter. The end of a ban or removal of an endorsement does not automatically settle the disclosure question. See the official rehabilitation guidance for England and Wales; check the separate rules for Scotland or Northern Ireland where relevant.

What if I Can’t Get One?

A specialist broker may be able to identify providers willing to consider your circumstances. You may be able to join another policy as a genuine named driver, but the insurer must accept you and the main-driver details must be correct. Do not drive unless valid cover and the necessary licence entitlement are in place.
