What is a TT Code?

TT99 is a special endorsement showing disqualification under the totting-up rules. It records the disqualification; it is not a warning code that starts a new three-year period in which you can accumulate 12 points.

What is TT99?

TT99 indicates disqualification following the accumulation of 12 or more points within three years. The court deals with the ban under the applicable rules. See the official endorsement list.

Is it a criminal conviction?

TT99 records the totting-up disqualification arising from the underlying motoring offences. It is not a separate offence with an extra award of 12 points. Report the ban and relevant underlying convictions accurately when an insurer asks.

How can points affect car insurance?

Factor What it means for your quote
Penalty points and convictions There is no fixed percentage increase that applies to every driver. Insurers assess the offence, its date and your wider circumstances.
Cover and excess Compare the cover, excesses, exclusions and payment terms as well as the price.
Insurer criteria Quotes and acceptance vary. A comparison does not guarantee a saving or an offer of insurance.

What is the penalty?

The court determines the disqualification under the totting-up rules. GOV.UK describes a usual six-month ban for a first totting-up disqualification, with longer periods for relevant repeat disqualifications. TT99 remains on the record for four years from conviction. See the official guidance.

Is it serious?

A totting-up ban means you cannot drive for the disqualification period. It can affect work, travel and future insurance options, but it does not by itself mean you lose ownership of your car. Check the court order and the steps needed to regain entitlement.

How long does it stay on your licence?

Starting from the date of the conviction – 4 years is the period of time that it has to appear on your driving record.

How does it affect insurance?

There is no fixed percentage or cash increase that applies to everyone. Insurers consider the offence, driving history, vehicle, address, use and other factors. A historic average cannot predict your quote, and some insurers may decline. Compare current personalised quotes for suitable cover.

Driving-record retention and the period before a conviction becomes spent are different. The sentence, your age and the relevant UK jurisdiction matter. The end of a ban or removal of an endorsement does not automatically settle the disclosure question. See the official rehabilitation guidance for England and Wales; check the separate rules for Scotland or Northern Ireland where relevant.

What is the least expensive insurance I can get?

Compare premiums alongside cover, exclusions, compulsory and voluntary excess and any instalment interest. Specialist insurers and brokers may help, but are not automatically cheaper. Use accurate mileage and vehicle-use details. Only add a genuine named driver, identify the main driver correctly and choose an excess you can afford.

Finding providers that may consider you

Compare providers that will consider your actual conviction and ban history. Use the correct code and dates, and check licence entitlement before driving. A specialist broker may help, but neither cover nor a lower price is guaranteed.
