Do you get disqualified for drunk driving?

Yes, there is a mandatory driving ban if you drive a vehicle with alcohol levels above the legal limit. The length of your ban is determined by how much you were over the legal limit.

The driving ban lasts a minimum of three years if you were previously convicted of drunk driving in the last 10 years. The ban can be reduced by taking a course.

Will points ruin my insurance?

Can I get insurance with DR10?

Yes, you can still get insurance with a DR10 conviction but the cost of your insurance will be more expensive.

Be aware that you will need to continue having insurance during your driving ban if the vehicle is parked on a public road. And a driving ban will usually null and void existing insurance for yourself and any other named drivers.

How can I make my insurance cheaper with a DR10?

To make your insurance cheaper with a DR10, it’s best to get support from a vehicle insurance broker, preferably one that has a track record of helping convicted drivers get insured via high-risk policies

These companies and services may be able to unlock insurance policies not easily found online, or even exclusive deals through the broker.

You should also consider the vehicle you will drive in the future and how changing might reduce your insurance. More on this later.

DR10 insurance

There are some car insurance companies offering cheaper car insurance to convicted drivers through policies specifically marketed to them, namely “convicted driver insurance” or “car insurance with DR10”.

You may want to search for these policies instead of focusing on the mainstream insurance market.

Combine niche searches like this with the use of comparison websites to save time, but don’t feel like you have to choose insurance through a third party as it could make it more expensive.

How long does DR10 affect insurance?

Although the conviction remains on your driving licence for eleven years, you only need to declare the driving conviction for five years from the date of conviction.

Car insurance companies cannot increase your car insurance premiums for convictions that were made over five years ago. Even if they ask, you don’t have to tell them about convictions from more than five years ago.

So, if five years have passed, you can search for standard car insurance policies rather than DR10 car insurance or drunk driving car insurance only.

What is the cheapest car to insure after a ban?

Another way to reduce the cost of your insurance after a DR10 or any other driving conviction is to start driving a vehicle that is typically cheaper to insure.

Some vehicles that are often cheaper to insure are:

  1. Renault Clio
  2. Ford Fiesta
  3. Mazda-CX5
  4. Skoda Yeti
  5. Kia Rio

How can I get cheaper insurance after a drink driving ban? (quick recap)

The best ways to get cheap insurance after a drink driving ban are to:

  1. Search drink driving insurance or convicted driver insurance
  2. Use a broker who specialises in helping convicted drivers
  3. Consider using and insuring a vehicle that is typically cheaper to insure
