If credit-card repayments are unaffordable, there may be ways to manage the payments or obtain a release from some debt. A write-off is not automatic and no fixed percentage can be promised.
In this easy guide, we’ll share clear and simple advice on:
- The legal ways to write off credit card debt in the UK.
- Steps to follow when you can’t pay your debt in full.
- Tips on how to pay off part of your debt.
- Choosing the best method to write off your debt.
- Other options if you’re struggling with unaffordable debt.
This guide focuses on England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different insolvency and limitation rules. A debt adviser can assess your full circumstances before you choose a solution.
Let’s dive in.
Is a Write Off Possible?
Credit-card debt may be released through an appropriate insolvency procedure or an agreed settlement. A creditor may also consider a discretionary write-off in exceptional circumstances.
We’ll break these down for you here.
Formal write-offs and old-debt time limits
- Statute Barred
Some old credit-card claims in England and Wales become statute-barred. This is a court time limit rather than cancellation. The relevant six years generally runs from the cause of action, with payments, qualifying written acknowledgment and earlier proceedings affecting the position.
An existing judgment needs separate analysis. If court papers arrive, respond by the deadline and raise any limitation defence; do not assume an old debt cannot be the subject of a claim.
Get advice before paying or acknowledging a disputed old debt. See National Debtline’s guide for the checks and the separate rules on collection contact.
- Debt Relief Order
In England and Wales, a DRO may be available where the debts counted for DRO eligibility total no more than £50,000, surplus monthly income is no more than £75 and assets are within the £2,000 limit, with a separate vehicle allowance of up to £4,000. Homeowners are not eligible, and other residence, insolvency and conduct conditions apply.
A DRO normally lasts 12 months and protects the listed qualifying debts during that period. At the end, those debts are normally released if the order remains valid. Excluded debts and new liabilities remain, and changes in circumstances must be reported.
Applications go through an approved intermediary, and there is no application fee in England and Wales. Check the full DRO guidance, including the six-year credit-file record and other restrictions.
- Bankruptcy
Bankruptcy can release qualifying credit-card debts but may put assets, including a home, at risk and affect work, borrowing and other arrangements. In England and Wales discharge is normally after 12 months, while income contributions can continue for up to three years and asset administration can take longer.
It does not erase every liability, and it is not suitable for everyone. Read the official bankruptcy guide and obtain advice before applying.

How to Write Off Part of the Debt
A full-and-final settlement or a successfully completed IVA may release part of the debt, but they have different conditions and consequences.
- Debt Settlement Offer
A full-and-final settlement asks the creditor to accept an affordable lump sum and release the remaining balance. Obtain clear written acceptance of that full-and-final basis before sending money; a part-payment alone does not cancel the rest.
For example, if the balance is £2,000, ask an adviser how any available lump sum should be shared among creditors and whether settlement is appropriate.
There is no standard 75% offer that creditors must accept. Explain the circumstances and funding source, protect essential costs and check how the account will be reported to credit reference agencies. See National Debtline’s settlement guidance.
- Individual Voluntary Arrangement
An IVA is a formal insolvency arrangement proposed and supervised by a licensed insolvency practitioner. It can involve regular contributions, a lump sum or other agreed assets and has fees and restrictions.
There is no universal statutory £15,000 debt minimum, £100 monthly payment or employment requirement. Suitability depends on sustainable contributions, assets, debt types and alternatives. Under the England and Wales 2025 protocol, typical cases have at least £7,000 debt and two creditors, but those are not universal legal thresholds.
A 2025 protocol regular-payment IVA normally starts at 60 months, or 72 where assessed beneficial home equity is at least £10,000 under the protocol calculation. Older or bespoke arrangements may differ. Only successful completion releases remaining included debts; there is no guaranteed 85% write-off.

What Are the Other Options?
An affordable informal repayment arrangement or DMP may be suitable, but it normally aims to repay the debt in full and does not itself prevent court action.
Consolidation creates new borrowing and is not a guaranteed way to reduce debt. Compare the total cost, interest, fees and term, and the risk to your home if unsecured debt becomes secured.
If you are already struggling, obtain debt advice before applying for more credit. Lower monthly payments can still mean paying more overall.
