What is a convicted driver?

A convicted driver is someone who has received a driving conviction for a driving offence. There are many different types of possible driving convictions, which are categorised by two letters and a series of numbers.

For example, CD convictions relate to careless driving. DD convictions relate to dangerous driving and DR relates to drink or drug offences while driving. There are others.

These letters are followed by numbers to identify specific offences within the category. For example, CD10 refers to offences whereby the driver doesn’t take due care and CD90 is where a driver’s careless driving causes the death of another person, while the driver is also unlicensed, uninsured, or disqualified from driving.

As you can see by these short examples, driving convictions can significantly differ in seriousness. Different convictions, therefore, result in different numbers of penalty points being added to your driving license, various fines, and possible driving bans. You may be sent to prison in some cases.

Can you get insurance with a conviction?

People with driving convictions can still get the same level of vehicle insurance as people who don’t have any driving convictions. However, people with a driving conviction should expect fewer options and expect to pay more for their insurance.

Which insurance companies do not ask about criminal convictions?

All insurance companies will want to know about your previous driving convictions.

This is because the insurance company wants to get an idea of how responsible you are while driving a vehicle. The only way to get an accurate understanding of this is to look at your past driving history.

The insurer then uses this information to decide if it will offer you an insurance policy, and if so, how much it will cost you to be insured through them.

How do you get insurance with convictions?

You can get vehicle insurance with driving convictions in the same way as you would get vehicle insurance without driving convictions. You can compare the market and make applications.

However, you might receive a string of rejections if you have a more serious driving conviction. Some standard policies aren’t available for those with driving convictions, or you might be offered eye-watering expensive policies online.

But don’t give up just yet. There still might be a way to get cheap car insurance for convicted drivers.

How much does a driving conviction increase your insurance?

Driving insurance is well documented to increase the cost of insurance premiums. Some sources suggest that the average increase in insurance premiums is over 100% if the conviction was in the previous four years. However, this isn’t the case all of the time.

The level of increase to your insurance premiums after a driving conviction will depend on the type of driving offence you were convicted for and the number of penalty points applied to your license. Many insurance companies use penalty points to infer how serious the driving offence was and therefore how unsafe, dangerous or recklessly you were driving at the time.

This is comparable to loan providers who check your credit score before deciding whether to provide you with a loan and if so, at what interest rate.

How long does a driving conviction affect your insurance?

The length of time a driving conviction will stay on your licence is determined by the type of offence.

Different driving convictions apply penalty points to your driving license for different amounts of time.

Let’s take a look at two possible driving convictions to understand this better…

  1. Using a vehicle with defective tyres (CU30) will apply three penalty points to your license which will remain for four years from the date of the offence.
  2. Causing death through careless driving while being above the legal alcohol limit (CD60) will apply between three and eleven penalty points which remain for eleven years from the date of conviction

Note that some penalty points expire a length of time after the date of the offence, while others expire a length of time from the date of conviction.

However, you only need to declare any driving conviction to insurers for five years, regardless of how long it stays on your driving licence.

How to find the cheapest convicted driver insurance

The most effective ways to find the cheapest convicted driver insurance plans are:

  1. Search online for cheap convicted driver insurance rather than just regular vehicle insurance
  2. Use the same search terms when using comparison websites
  3. Enlist the services of a vehicle insurance broker who specialises in helping drivers with a recent conviction get insured
