What are Student Loans?

Government student finance can include tuition-fee and maintenance loans, with repayment rules depending on the plan and jurisdiction. Private study loans and older mortgage-style loans can work differently. See related guidance.

Student loans can cover the costs of things like lectures, tuition fees, seminars, any equipment you may need, transportation fees, and they can help you with living costs.

Payment schedules vary by funding type and nation. Tuition-fee loans are normally paid to the institution, while maintenance support is paid to the student.

What is a Student Loan Debt?

Your Student Loan Debt is, as the name might suggest, the debt that you owe for your student loans, and studies suggest that this debt is increasing.

In 2022, the SLD in England was at just over £45,000. In 2020, it was just over £40,0002. However, the debt for each country in the UK is vastly different as well.

Historic averages do not decide what you must repay. Identify the loan plan, any arrears or overpayment, and the current rules for your circumstances.

For income-contingent loans, repayment thresholds depend on the plan and change over time. Use the current GOV.UK threshold for your plan; taking a postgraduate loan does not automatically suspend undergraduate repayments. See related guidance.

  • The calculation normally uses income over the relevant threshold, with 9% for Plans 1, 2, 4 and 5 and 6% for the Postgraduate Loan plan.
  • Weekly and monthly payroll thresholds apply to the pay period. Do not divide the annual threshold by a five-day or seven-day working week.

More than one plan, overseas residence or self-employment can affect how repayments are calculated and collected.

Some borrowers will not repay the full balance before the applicable cancellation date. That does not remove duties to supply information or pay sums legally due.

When is a student loan written off?

There is no universal 30-year period. Plans differ, and time-based cancellation normally runs from the April you were first due to repay rather than the date of graduation or first actual payment. See related guidance.

Being below the repayment threshold can mean no ordinary income-based payment is due, but it does not automatically remove an overpayment or arrears liability.

Do not assume that starting study later in life means no repayment will ever be due. Check the relevant eligibility, repayment and cancellation rules.

Can the debt go to collections?

SLC or an authorised collector may contact you about overdue amounts or overpayments. Verify the account and the agent through official details before sharing information.

An ordinary collection visit does not confer bailiff powers. The visitor cannot seize goods merely because the account has been referred to them.

The enforcement route depends on the loan and liability. Keep income and residence information up to date and respond to notices even if you believe no ordinary repayment should be due.

Where court enforcement is appropriate, the court can enter judgment and authorise a permitted enforcement method. A collector cannot simply issue its own CCJ or take goods without lawful authority.

Ordinary payroll and Self Assessment collection do not require the same process as civil court enforcement. Get advice about the specific action threatened.

Ignoring the Debt Collector

Ask SLC or the named provider for the basis of the amount and explain any dispute. A general proof request does not cancel the balance or extend a court deadline.

So, what happens if you earn over the specified amount and you choose to ignore your student loan debt collector?

Ignoring a valid arrears or overpayment demand can lead to further action. If the amount is wrong or unaffordable, raise that promptly through the correct channel.

After all, if you owe the money, and can pay the money, then you will be expected to.

But if you don’t pay, and you ignore the advances of your student loan debt collector, what can they do to get the money from you?

Do I Have to Pay?

First establish which loan, arrears or overpayment is being claimed and whether the calculation is correct.

The chances of being in student loan debt once you’ve finished university are high. But paying it off depends on what happens afterwards.

A current income below the threshold does not necessarily mean no payment is due for arrears or an overpayment. Cancellation also has plan-specific conditions; confirm the position rather than stopping payments on an assumption.

Pay sums properly due under the relevant rules, or ask about review and an affordable arrangement. Do not ignore court papers while disputing the account.
