What is a bus lane fine in Wolverhampton?

Wolverhampton has several bus lanes, which do not allow cars.

I’ve listed some of the major roads that have bus lanes in Wolverhampton here:

  • Market Street in the city centre
  • Darlington Street
  • Willenhall Road
  • Stafford Street

Bus lanes allow public transport to move quicker through the roads and not contribute further to traffic jams.

If drivers use the bus lane and are caught on camera, they will be issued a bus lane fine

Drivers may be issued a warning instead of a fine during road works, road closures, and diversions.

It’s not just driving on a bus lane in Wolverhampton that will get you a fine; if you drive through a bus gate or a contraflow, you will also receive a penalty charge notice

How much is a bus lane fine in Wolverhampton?

Drivers in Wolverhampton caught driving on a bus lane will receive an initial fine of £60.

However, if the fine is repaid within the early-repayment time frame of 14 days, the fine is reduced to £30

You must make a formal representation online within 28 days of receiving the Bus Lane Penalty Charge Notice.

When you receive your bus lane contravention fine, you will be given a web code to access the formal representation via the online portal.

Here is a great template to help you with your appeals: PCN Appeal Letter Template – Free Sample.

Appeal process steps

I’ve put together this table to help you better understand the appeal process. If you want to learn more about your PCN, don’t forget to read our detailed guide.

Process: Steps you should take:
When you receive the ticket… You should gather as much evidence as you can to support your appeal claim and prove that the ticket was unfairly issued.
If you were given the ticket in person/attached to your car… You must make an informal appeal (sent to the local authority/council that issued the PCN) within 14 days. This should be a letter with the evidence proving why the ticket was incorrectly given.
If it was posted to you… You will be given 21 days to submit an informal appeal (from the day you received the letter). Your informal appeal should be a letter with the evidence proving why the ticket was incorrectly given.
If the informal appeal is rejected… You will receive a Notice to Owner and will have 28 days to respond to this with a formal appeal. You can conduct the formal appeal online or via paper form. The Traffic Penalty Tribunal can send you one of these forms.
If the formal appeal is rejected… You will receive a Notice of Rejection. From here, you are free to challenge the council’s verdict at an independent tribunal.
If the independent tribunal disagrees with your appeal… You should pay the ticket within 28 days of the tribunal rejecting your appeal. If you don’t, the fine will be increased by 50%.
If you don’t have the money to pay the fine, you should contact Citizens Advice or another debt charity.

Is it better to pay or appeal?

Only appeal if you have a good reason.

It can be more difficult to win a bus lane fine appeal because you only need to enter the lane once and briefly to be guilty.

However, you might have entered the lane because signs were obstructed or to let an ambulance pass.

Make your initial appeal within 14 days and you may still be offered the discounted fine of £30 if it gets rejected!
